tom player freezes 930

Postby lainchbury » 14 Jul 2009, 08:18

Hi - hope someone can help me way down here in New Zealand
I have installed tom player on my 930
installed on the hard drive, with files on sd card
have changed the ini file accordingly
tom player starts, and after selecting the arrow on the red screen, goes to the icon scren with all tom player icons showing OK.
At this point it is frozen and nothing happens on pressing the screen (in any place on the screen at all).
On power off, screen goes white and requires a reset
Unit has Navigator 8.35 installed
Initially, had the video and audio directories on hard disk, but realised not enough space and put SD card in and altered the Tomplayer config file accordingly - carefully checked for tyo errors and case errors - Ok
help would be appreciated
If I do select the tom player, the unit works fine on all other functions - can go past the tomplayer selection screen no problem
any help would be appreciated
thanks
regards

Hi,

You problem sounds like a calibration issue
To begin , You can perform 2 tests:
- erase conf/pointercal file so that calibration will have to be done again (maybe there was a pb during the 1st calibration)
- Test the standalone image (copy the whole distrib folder at the root of an external sdcard including my ttsystem file and boot with this card in your device)

By the way i do not understand the end of your post :
"If I do select the tom player, the unit works fine on all other functions - can go past the tomplayer selection screen no problem"
what do you mean by "If I do select the tom player" ?

Best regards

Thanks for your prompt reply
firsty apologies in my text - forgot to read what I had written!! - forgot the word...not
should have read "If I do not select the tom player--- (red face now)

I can not find the conf/pointercal file anywhere on the unit, - have even run a file search for it
I assume it would be in either the root directory or a config directory?
(unit is a go930 running navigator 8.350)
HOWEVER does not seem to be an issue because:

Have had a bit of a play and achieved the following:

with the tom player installed on the internal drive
TOMTOM boots and operates normally
the TOMPlayer page is displayed and on selection displays the 6 icons
nothing can be selected and the unit appears frozen
on power down, screen goes white and freezes
have to reset to get power off

deleted the SDKRigistry and TomPlayer directories from fixed drive
Installed all files and directories from distrib directory to root on external sd card
Powered on unit and it booted to external card and ran the player fine

Tried again to reinstall on internal drive - same problem as prior, so have installed on external at present and will live with that OK unless you can advise how to get it to operate on fixed drive.
QUESTION
there are other files that from DISTRIB dir that I have not copied to the fixed drive that are also needed i.e.:
AUTHORS
COPYING
INSTALL
NEWS
README
ttssystem
As I understand, the existing ttssystem on the fixed drive must NOT be overwritten with the ttssystem from the TomPlayer distrib dirtectory, but are any of the other files required in the root directory oif the fixed drive?
thanks for your help

Hi,

OK it is a very good news : the standalone version does work...

In fact, even if it seems quite strange it tends to prove it is a calibration issue (because in my standalone image the touchscreen driver is not the same than with navigation software > V8 and the manual calibration is required only with navcore > v8)
You should find the pointercal file on your internal memory in folder "tomplayer/conf"
If you have navcore v8.350 you should have a calibration process to follow the first time you launch tomplayer in order to create this "pointercal" file...

you are right :
AUTHORS
COPYING
INSTALL
NEWS
README
files are not required : just text files with no functional use...

Again right : do not replace your ttsystem in internal memory by my ttsystem (unless you want to get rid of navcore and use your tomtom only with tomplayer ;-) )

tell me if you find the pointercal file at last,

Best regards

Thanks again Stephan - this is great support
Well - interesting
Have searched hard and definitely no pointercal file on either the hard drive or the removable sd card
To be sure, did a search for po*.*, and naturally it found files such as poland, portugal, poi etc
Also, on starting Tomplayer thie first time, it did not ask for any calibration
There is no conf directory on the hard drive, only a directory called Tom Tom-cfg which has 5 files in it
birthday
image
image.ver
local
release

another interesting one - removed sdcard and booted unit and found sound was turned off. May have been me in the player application muting, not sure. If I did, would it default the nav program on boot?

this all makes me look a little silly I know, but would like to see if I can solve it
thanks

and just clarifying
there is of course a conf directory on the removable sd but no pointercal in this directory
Does it create this only if run from the fixed drive?
Does it run only if no such file exists?
can I force it to run?
thanks

Hi Lyall

Thank you very much for your additional feedback.
You definitively don't have a pointercal file. Anyway you cannot have it as you have not run the calibration tool (it should have been automatically launched on a v8.350 navcore...)
To make a test, i attach a new launch script tomplayergui.sh (you have to unzip it) : it will launch the calibration tool .
Just replace the file in tomplayer folder and run tomplayer to check if things are better...

Best regards

thanks Stephan

reset up files on hard drive with new gui file - result: select TomPlayer from extra page - TomPlayer splash screen comes up with the entry button, but unit freezes at this point
Turn power off and unit shows white screen - have to reset

deleted files from fixed drive and reinstalled on SD card with new gui file - result: Boots to TomPlayer splash screen comes up with the entry button, but unit freezes at this point
Turn power off and unit shows powers off OK
replaced gui file 20/july/2009 with original 03/nov/2008 - unit boots up and works fine again (Tomplayer on the external sdcard)

I fear that I am wasting your time, and if can not be done, will accept it working via external sdcard only

OK thank you for your additional feedback.
This is definitively strange. In fact , to be efficient i would require a get a 930 and make tests by myself : i will try to borrow one to one of my friend...
For now, i have no other workaround than the standalone version...Sorry for this

Cheers
I'm facing the same issue. I've a Go 630, I'm able to start the app, see the splash screen and the following menu but no interaction will be recognized by touching the icons. A white screen will be the consequence when pushing the power button a reset is the solution to get the frozen TomTom up and running again.

Have you investigated the behaviour and already any news? Do you need any more information which will be a help to put some light on the underlying case?

Hi Nils
No, nothing further. I am happy to operate the player with it installed on the removable SD card.
Be aware, that with the program installed on trhe card, and the card inserted, it boots to the card and starts the player. Navigation is not available in this mode.
So, i leave the card out normally, and insert it when I want to use the player. A bit inconvenient, but it works

Hi
Thanks for the feedback.
That's working for me as well (standalone player). A workaround bot not really satisfying but still a great tool :)

Use external power (no PC usb) when calibrating screen, it works
delete conf/pointercal file so that calibration will have to be done again.
Tested 2 times.
